Making History Come Alive Through Project Based Learning

Method Schools takes a unique approach to Social Studies as it offers more than the traditional. Social Studies at Method Schools comes alive through hands on projects and activities.

In a traditional classroom students are taught to think that history is just a bunch of old facts and dates that they must memorize from a very very heavy textbook. However, history is clearly a lot more than that. What’s missing in most traditional schools is the opportunity to DO history.

For example, as a former History teacher in a traditional classroom, I was not able to supply my students with technology to research. I could only provide them with worksheets and handouts and trust that they would honor academic integrity and research on their own. At Method, every student gets to work on a laptop. We are able to watch over students as they work, research in front of our eyes, and see their reactions as they learn about a part of history they never knew before. They even get to work in Google Classroom, where we monitor their progress as they work. We provide students with immediate feedback, encouragement, and spark deeper thinking.

What else?

Method Schools provides the materials and the time to create and perform in class simulations. At Method students we encourage students to work together and share their curiosities about the world around them. They have opportunities to learn about the geography of the world and the geography of their local surroundings.

The most important part of all this is that students are learning while they are having fun! This is the magic of Method Schools. They are learning while doing and finding enjoyment in every new lesson. Wouldn’t it be great if you designed the Earth on a blue balloon? Stay tuned.
