Every Homeschooler Needs a Tribe

Homeschool Families Need a Tribe

“We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow man.” -Herman Melville

Back in the 50s when my mother was a young girl, she grew up in a neighborhood where it was rare to own a second car. Most of the families in her community were housebound as the breadwinner of the family took the car to work each day. My mom loves to share stories of her childhood. Each day at 5 pm, all the neighborhood families would gather under my grandmother’s large oak tree, coming outside to beat the heat and share life. Children would run around and play, and parents would gather on blankets and talk. The community built, connections made, and everyone felt they belonged.

In today’s world, our culture has drastically changed. Modern conveniences have created a society where independence is valued, and a sense of community has waned. Because of this, many people live a life with a nagging feeling of loneliness, a desire to connect with others, but the uncertainty of how. As homeschoolers, there is a myriad of opportunities to get involved in extracurricular activities, but in an endless sea of ever-changing names and faces, we can sometimes feel lost, without an anchor to a real sense of community and belonging.

Here at Method, we know how important it is to belong, to be a part of a whole. That’s why we have created continual opportunities to connect within our Method family. We have so many amazing people within our school, and we want you to get to know one another, to establish friendships, to cultivate a sense of belonging and community together.

Here are some of the ways for you to get involved, meet others, and establish friendships within Method:

Learning Tiles - Have you signed up for a Learning Tile? These are live, interactive and onsite or virtual classes held weekly. Students interact with one another and the teacher and have the opportunity to explore new topics and make new friends. We have a blast each week in our tiles, and we highly encourage you to join in this interactive experience with us.

Field Trips - Method offers a plethora of field trips for our students throughout Southern California. Field trips are a great way to get to know other families and spend time with other homeschoolers that you’ll see regularly. We explore educational venues together, and we make friends along the way.

Community Service - Joining in with like-minded individuals in the service of others is a great way to connect, make friends, and develop a sense of purpose. Each month, we offer a way to get involved in helping others, and our students come away with the satisfaction that only comes with helping others. You can see upcoming service projects on our Events Page, and we update our list regularly.

Your Teacher - Method teachers care deeply about their students, and we want you to know that we are here for your family. If you need a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, we are here for you and are walking through the journey of life together with you.

We hope this month you’ll branch out and try something new. Join in a tile, hop on over to a field trip, roll up your sleeves and delve into a community service project. You are a valuable member of our community. We are glad you’re here.
